What to consider when buying Motorcycle Clothing....

Crash Helmets

Motorcycle Jacket

Motorcycle Boots and Gloves

Crash Helmets have one Primary Purpose ... to keep you alive. Your helmet is the most important item you can buy when you are shopping for biker gear. Don’t buy the cheapest but get the best you can afford...you will not regret it.

A full face helmet is by far the safest type of helmet as it gives you chin and face protection as well as having a visor for comfort and great visibility.

Open face helmets are popular with cruiser type bikes as they are great in the summer months for low speeds with sunglasses or goggles. However, as a biker with over 30 years of riding, speeds of over 60 mph with an open face helmet are a big no no!

Ventilation is important if you ride in the winter months, as the vents can reduce misting of your visor considerably. Remember though...they can be noisier.

Quality

Always buy a helmet that is to British Standards ie BS 6658:1985

Biker Boots again are a big Safety Item. Next to the Crash Helmet your boots are the  most important. Your feet, ankles and lower legs are very exposed when riding and can easily be hit and damaged either by cars etc or when you fall off.

Look at Professional Racing Boots and you will see that they are very rigid with metal, carbon or plastic reinforcement to save the lower leg from serious damage.

At the very least buy good solid leather boots with good ankle protection

Biker Gloves protect your hands from the elements and reduce gravel rash if you fall off.

It is important that they are a good fit and allow good feel of the controls

Summer gloves are lighter and thinner and are great for feel. They do not keep your hands warm in the winter though!

Man made material such as Gor Tex are used widely now in gloves as they are very warm, light and water repellant. Leather tends to be the opposite.

Bike jackets come in a huge variety of styles, materials and colours. What you need to remember is how you are going to use your bike!

For a Commuter then a warm, waterproof textile jacket with lots of pockets may be the answer.

For a Casual User perhaps a light leather jacket which is less bulky is better for you.

For a Sports Bike Enthusiast  then I would say you would prefer a Full Set of Racing leathers to give you full protection and that racer look.

Whatever jacket you buy, make sure it is not too tight, that it will give you some rain protection and that it is tough enough to give you damage protection should you fall off.

Tip!  Your elbows are often the first to take a knock so choose a jacket with elbow pads built in!
